Just what is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a device which is used to replace one or more teeth. It consists of three main parts:
The implant itself, which is a fixture or screw made of titanium and has a roughened surface to help it attach to the bone like a new artificial root.
A titanium abutment post which is attached to the implant itself and is used to connect to the crown, or replacement teeth.
A zirconia oxide crown, which we make in our own in-house laboratory. They are simply beautiful crowns and the best available materials. Read more how we can make crowns the same day here and in our same-day crowns blog article.
Why might you need a dental implant?
If you are missing one or more teeth, or a full arch of teeth, a dental implant may be the best option for you.
Here are some things you should consider about dental imprints:
Benefits and advantages
A dental implant has many advantages including improved oral function, aesthetics and speech. They are custom-made to match the color, size and shape of your original teeth. If your smile’s appearance and self-esteem are important to you, unlike other replacement options, people will never know your implant is not your original teeth.
With an implant, it functions like your natural teeth, which makes speaking, eating and smiling a joy. Unlike a dental bridge, which relies on neighboring teeth for support, an implant helps protect the structure and health of neighboring teeth.
With proper care and maintenance, a dental implant can last a lifetime.
Other considerations
There are many alternatives to teeth replacements, including dentures and bridges. Initially, they can be costly and it’s a more lengthy process, but in the long run they can be less costly due to their durability and less maintenance. You can learn more about dentures and bridges restorations here.
During your preliminary consultation, one of our dentists will discuss with you your options for teeth replacement. Thus, you can make an informed decision of which solution is best for you.
The implant process
There are several steps involved in the dental implant process. It starts with a comprehensive visual examination, x-rays, state-of-the-art digital scans using our Dentsply Sirona CT scanner, which we have on site, oral surgery to place the implant, and attachment of the new tooth or device if more than one tooth is involved.
As each patient’s needs are unique, your dentist will create a customized plan for you.
Do you wish to be asleep for your treatments?
Some of the implant procedures can be painful or patients can be anxious. We offer IV sleep sedation therapy which puts you in a semi-conscious state during the procedure. You are actually wide awake, but are fully relaxed and won’t feel any pain. When we are finished with your procedure, you may even ask “when are you going to begin?” You won’t remember anything, although if asked a question, you can respond.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. LeRoy Carson, son Dr. Derek Carson has been performing sedation therapy since 2005, and has a Moderate Sedation License from the Dental Board of California.
The effects are totally eliminated from your system within a few hours during which time you will be unable to drive. And we encourage you to avoid strenuous activities, going to work, or making important decisions. Read more about sleep sedation therapy in our blog article.
After the procedure
Other than the quality of our dentistry, your comfort is our first priority. Depending upon your pain threshold, we can suggest pain relievers from OTC medications like Ibuprofen to prescription drugs. We will prescribe prescription pain-killers if needed, and as requested..
Healing
The procedures in a dental implant take time to heal. We provide you with instructions on how to care for yourself during healing, aside from pain management. You should plan ahead to take care of your nutritional needs. You can download our post-operation document here (English or Spanish).
